Most common varieties of barley require mechanical and abrasive removal of the tenacious hull covering. This process also removes most of the bran layer and germ. Bob's Red Mill Whole Grain Barley is grown from an ancient variety that grows in a loose hull, called hull-less barley. It comes to you whole and complete with all its nutrition. Use it in most recipes that call for pearl barley.

Basic Cooking Instructions

(Prepare as side dish, served like potatoes or rice)

  • 1 cup Bob's Red Mill Hull-Less Barley
  • 3 ½ cups Water

Bring to a boil, then let simmer for 40 minutes. If you desired larger, softer barley, continue to simmer for an additional 40 minutes, stirring occasionally. The hull-less barley multiplies like a bean. Yields 3 cups of cooked hull-less barley. Great with your favorite gravy, added to soups, or as a breakfast cereal.

Absolutely most nutritious barley one can consume. No need to damage the fiber by removing the hull as this one is naturally hull-less.Whole grain at its best! My wife and I find this product very tasty. This is the only barley we eat now.

Scrumptiously firm texture I really like to use these in my salad. In Japan pearl barley is more common and hull-less is very expensive and rare so when I found this product in iHerb I ordered three bags at once! Hull-less barley contains much more fiber than pearl barley. I defintely purchase it again.

I eat it with my curry. A great replacement for rice which makes me put on weight! I cook it shorter for a bit harder grain - great for salads, or longer for softer and smoother finish.
