Increase the nutritional value of any meal with a sprinkle of chia seed, a superfood revered by ancient Aztec warriors and modern-day athletes.

Thousands of years ago, chia seed was a staple in the diets of ancient Mayans and Aztecs. The word chia is derived from the Mayan language, meaning "strength", and Aztec warrior relied on chia seed to boost energy and increase stamina. Today this tiny seed is a favorite of athletes, especially distance runners, who tout it as an endurance enhancing superfood. The mild, nutty flavor goes well with both sweet and savory dishes. Use chia seed in pudding and smoothies, sprinkle on top of porridge and salads, and add to baked goods in place of flaxseed meal or poppy seeds.

Dear Friends,

There's a saying, "What once was old is new again". This expression certainly applies to our traditional stone grinding mills, which are much like the one use in early Roman times. It's also true about many of our favorite whole grains, which originated in ancient times. Amaranth, chia seed, farro, Kamut grain, millet, quinoa, sorghum, spelt and teff- they may be lesser known than familiar grains like wheat and barley, but each one has a story to tell, with histories going back thousands of years and rich cultural traditions from around the globe.

Lucky for use, these whole grains aren't just ancient history; they're also tasty, nutritious additions to modern meals. These "super grains" of the ancient world are wonderfully healthy, and their unique flavors and textures will add a delicious twist to your favorite recipes. They're versatile too- great for snack, salads, side dishes, entrees and baked goods.

At Bob's Red Mill, we're always exploring the world in search of new whole grain adventures, and we're proud to mill the widest possible diversity of whole grain foods. With that in mind, we invite you to join us in discovering these grains of antiquity.

To your good health, Bob Moore

Simple love

Posted by nattfisk on Jul 13, 2012

I simply love chia seeds! They're good for me, contain omega and fiber. They're so small and versitile that I can put them in everything! I use them when I bake bread, crackers and granola bars for some extra fiber and energy. I always put ts in my morning smoothie or morning oatmeal. If you have problems with you digestion, try soaking a tbs of these in some water or apple juice for a few hours, and drink it all a few hours before you go to bed. Your body will send you its regards the next morning.

We have been using Chia for some time now and thought we would try Bob's Red Mill as we use a few of their other items. It is cheaper than other brands that we us and to quality is Bob's standard, excellent.
