Horse Chestnut

The horse chestnut tree is a native of the Balkan Peninsula. It is sometimes called Spanish chestnut or buckeye. It appears helpful for chronic venous insufficiency, a condition that affects the veins in the legs. Horse chestnut contains aescin, which has an anti-inflammatory effect and appears to strengthen the veins and reduce the release of certain enzymes that cause chronic vein disease. Speak with your doctor before taking it, as horse chestnut can interact with certain medications.
