What is the Açaí berry?
The Açaí berry is an inch-long reddish, purple fruit. It comes from the acai palm tree (Euterpe oleracea), which is native to South America. Research on the acai berry has focused on its possible antioxidant activity. Theoretically, that activity may help prevent diseases caused by oxidative stress such as heart disease and cancer. Acai contains several substances called anthocyanins and flavonoids. The word anthocyanin comes from two Greek words meaning “plant” and “blue.” Anthocyanins are responsible for the red, purple, and blue hues in many fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Foods that are richest in anthocyanins -- such as blueberries, red grapes, red wine, and açai -- are very strongly colored, ranging from deep purple to black.
Brightly colored fruits, have been praised as superior health protectors. These edible delights are highly beneficial foods because of the vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, and phytochemicals that they contain. Antioxidants are a group of phytochemicals, each carrying unique properties valuable for maintaining our health. For more details about specific types of antioxidants.
ORAC, short for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, is a measure of the total antioxidant score of foods. More specifically, ORAC measures the ability of foods (and other substances like blood plasma) to 'sponge up' or remove oxygen free radicals – highly reactive compounds that do tremendous damage to the delicate machinery of our cells (please see glossary). The antioxidant value of Acai, powder described in ORAC units is:
