Raintree Nutrition's yerba mate leaf powder (Ilex paraguayensis) which is rich in the naturally occurring plant chemicals that this plant is regarded for. The primary active chemical constituency of yerba mate comprises xanthine alkaloids (caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline), saponins, and up to 10% chlorogenic acid. Sterols resembling ergosterol and cholesterol are also present in yerba mate, and novel saponins have been discovered in the leaf (and named matesaponins). Raintree's yerba mate is a green unroasted leaf that has been sustainably wild-harvested in the Brazilian Amazon and has been milled into a fine powder which is suitable to stuff into capsules or to prepare your own teas, tinctures or extracts.
This plant is best prepared as an infusion (tea): Use one teaspoon of powder for each cup of water. Pour boiling water over herb in cup and allow to steep 10 minutes. Strain tea (or allow settled powder to remain in the bottom of cup) and drink warm. It is traditionally taken in 1 cup amounts, 2-3 times daily. It is also suitable to stuff into capsules.
Yerba mate contains caffeine and should not be used by those who are sensitive or allergic to caffeine. Excessive consumption of caffeine is contraindicated for persons with high blood pressure, diabetes, ulcers, and other diseases.
Yerba mate should not be consumed excessively and chronically (as it has been documented to increase the risk of oral and esophageal cancers).
100% pure yerba mate leaves (Ilex paraguayensis).
No binders, fillers or additives are used. It is a wild harvested product—grown naturally in the Brazilian Amazon without any pesticides or fertilizers. This is a natural green leaf powder that has not been roasted, and will not taste like the traditionally prepared roasted leaves that are used as a beverage.
iHerb Customer Reviews
This Yerba Mate grind is uncured, similar to white tea and certain green teas. It's the best, and I recommend that Yerba lovers put a teaspoon per 8oz in boiling water. Allow it to sit until it's cool enough not to burn your oral mucosa tissue (yerba + burning hot water = oral cancers in some studies). Then you can drink it Usually, Yerba is cured over a wood fire, causing a moderate amount of carcinogenic nitrosamines to leech into the final tea product. This isn't good. Furthermore, the taste of uncured Yerba is superior in my opinion. It's sweeter and less bitter. Yerba is theoretically a good adjunct those trying to use nicotine replacement products to quick smoking. Yerba Mate may inhibt MAO-B enzymes, which is part of what gives tobacco smoke additional euphoriant properties (with concomitant withdrawal effects) beyond nicotine alone. MAO-B partial inhibition may or may not be pleasant for typical drinkers. It, can cause agitation in some people.
I have had other brands of Yerba Mate before but this is by far the strongest (and the best value). It boosts energy and reduces appetite!
