Henna is the only natural alternative to chemical hair colorings that are controversial to health considerations and harsh on the hair. Rainbow Henna is 100% natural plant material- no additives, chemicals, preservatives, metallic salts or metals. Worldwide use of Henna has been practiced and documented for over 9000 years.
Red Henna comes from small shrubs, called Lawsonia, that are native to the Middle East, West Asia, and North Africa. The leaves are dried and then pulverized into a fine powder. We also use the plants: Indigoferra, Cassia Obovata, Marigold & Chamomile Flowers to make the different shades. We choose only the finest botanicals from around the world to be used in our Hair Color.
Rainbow Henna coats the outside of each strand of hair. The shade of Henna is reflected through the hair while enhancing your hair's natural color. The cuticle is smoothed by Henna's sealing action, giving hair a polished look by making the light reflect off providing shine. Regular use of Henna can texturize the hair, giving it extra body- this becomes more evident with each application.
Rainbow Henna color will last approximately 4 to 6 weeks but is safe to use more frequently.
Rainbow Henna may be applied on wet or dry hair, but it is important that the hair be clean and free of any hair sprays, gels or conditioners. If you wish to shampoo first, towel hair dry before applying.
Pour Rainbow Henna Powder into a glass or plastic bowl. Use enough powder to cover the areas it is being applied to.
*Do not use a metal bowl or utensils*
Boil 8-16 oz of liquid (water, coffee or tea). Add the liquid gradually, using a wooden or plastic spoon mix thoroughly to reach a creamy yogurt like consistency. More liquid can be added if mixture is too thick or thickens up during application. You do not need to use all of the liquid prepared just enough to reach the right consistency.
To help cover grey or white hair mix powder with coffee or tea and 1-2 tbs of apple cider vinegar
*See below for specific instructions based on desired results
*Special Recipes and hints for use on grey hair to customize results:
Coffee or Black Tea (English Breakfast, Darjeeling, Ceylon): To help tone down red tones, deep brown-red tones, or cover grey/white hair, substitute coffee/tea for water. Use brewed, black coffee not instant.
Coffee alternatives can also be used. Can be used with black, red and brown Henna shades.
Red Teas (Rooibos, Raspberry Leaf, Red Zinger): To help enhance red tones makes them more vibrant. Can be used with all Henna shades.
Chamomile Tea: To help enhance and bring out golden blonde highlights. Can be used with Blonde, Marigold Blonde and Strawberry Blonde Henna Shades.
For Dry Hair:
Add 1 egg, 2-4 tbsp olive oil, or 2-4 tbsp plain yogurt to the Henna mixture. Only select one of these options. These natural ingredients not only condition, but can help with the application and rinsing processes.
Neutral Henna: Use as a conditioner to help add body and shine to the hair. Neutral or "Clear" Henna does not deposit color. Mix with boiling water to desired consistency and apply to hair the same way as the color shades.
You can wear plastic or rubber gloves to avoid staining your hands, although Henna does not typically stain or scalp. Henna is heat activated and we recommended using it shortly after it is mixed.
*Henna does not typically cause a reaction and does not contain any known allergens, however if you have sensitive skin or chemical sensitives a patch test on the skin is recommended before applying the full application.
- Section hair. Sections should be about 1" thick.
- Once Henna mixture is at a safe heat (warm to hot) begin at the scalp and paint on the Henna with a brush, applicator bottle or hand from roots to the ends.
- Continue until all the hair is thickly coated with the Henna mixture.
- Place a cotton or tissue band around the hairline (optional).
- Cover the hair with a shower cap, plastic bag or plastic wrap to keep Henna on hair.
- Wrap towel around the head turban style to keep in heat.
For best result, use a Salon dome dryer, Heat lamp, or Thermo Heat Cap

It was really hard to convince my Mom to go with a henna product for her grey hair, which turned from a dark, chocolate brown, from chemotherapy, for breast cancer. I have been using the Rainbow Research henna, Persian Red for about 3 months, and it's been doing a really good job of making my greys look like red streaks, which I don't mind at all. I've tried other brands in past, and it was at-first very, very difficult to convince my Mom that this wouldn't make her hair red/orange. She had been using a commercial semi-permanent color, and I was really afraid for her to keep using it. My Mom was adamant about not wanting to do anything more to her hair, I had asked her many times about our having a "spa day" with henna for her greys, and she was too tired or non-believing to accept the offer. When I was ordering some other products at Iherb.com I ordered this as well and had the box sent to my mother's house. She was then able to look at the innocuous jar, and decided she would try it. She was very, very nervous throughout the whole process, but I knew I wouldn't get her to cooperate if I had purchased a 2-step process for grey hair. My persistence and like of my own experiences with this brand of henna paid off, big time! I followed the directions for use with grey hair, vinegar and coffee, no water, for mixing. I don't make a fuss with my own henna concoctions, and just use an ordinary old towel, let it "bake" for about an hour, and I'm always happy with my Persian Red. Well, her hair came out so so close to her natural chocolate brown. I knew the fibers would also help fill in a bald spot on the top of her head. That's why I gently pushed her toward this product as it's a very simple, fast mix, application (I just basically glop it on myself and my Mom with plastic gloves, newspaper on the floor and old towels). And then like my wn process, we just wrapped her hair in an old towel for an hour. Ok, it's a bit messy, but honestly, the results were just gorgeous!!!!! We only rinsed it out with water and then conditioner, and this is an important piece, do not wash it for 24-48 hours. The dye sets in during this time, and the conditioner you use during your rinse will make it very soft. I am really happy and impressed with this henna brand. It's affordable, reliable, and just fantastic! BTW: her grey was about 20-30%. And the bald spot looks a little more filled in. It was also really fun to give my Mom something that she at first refused, but which allowed us to bond, and which had really, really great results. Her hair had lovely dark brown highlights instead of the greys, blended so naturally, my Dad even complimented! AS+++++++++
I had read the reviews and thought it was 'worth a try'. Previously I tried a Lush Cosmetics Henna block (Caca Bruin), but it required 4 hours in the hair, which was not feasible. This is much easier. For this I followed the directions for hair with grey (that is to use brewed coffee and 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar), I bought a hairdresser's cape, wear old clothes and apply Vaseline to my face, neck and ears! I apply the mix with with my hands in disposable gloves and work from the front to back, scalp out to ends, twisting it in strands and patting it onto my head. I achieve good covereage, but if the mixture is a bit thick, it doesn't get right down to the roots. I have found I need to add much more coffee/vinegar than the one cup specified (maybe two cups?) to get it to the slurry stage - more 'gloopy' but not runny. Then I wrap my hair in cling wrap, put on a shower cap - and if others are around, put a towel over the top, turban style. Rinse out using a hand held shower (easier) then condition. My hair looks beautiful at the end, so the two hours (including showers to wash hair before and after)is time well spent. I don't mind the henna smell,so the fact it is there for a few days doesn't bother me. No one has commented about it (other than my husband) so perhaps it isn't obvious anyway. The colour does fade a little, but no obvious lines because it fades to my dark brown hair colour. I tend to get a bit of regrowth (the grey hairs) after about 3 weeks so will probably do it on a four week cycle. After a few goes, you become quite fast at doing it. I leave it on as long as I can (usually about 1.5 hours) and can potter around home. So persevere - it isn' difficult!! The results are much nicer than chemical dyes and my hair is much softer.
Great ingredients, but really not friendly to put on the hair + didn't colour my hair

While I love that the product is fully organic and has only natural ingredients, it really is a mess to apply on the hair and it didn't colour mine. I tried it several times, but the result was always the same: a messy bathroom, and a hair colour that stayed the same.

I mixed this with lemon and coconut oil. Makes hair feels softer.
I don't recommend it at all

In my opinion, this is not true Henna because it doesn't cover the grey hair as well as it make the hair very dry. I will not order this again.
I love Rainbow Henna!

I love Rainbow Henna! As a salt-and-pepper grandma with fragrance allergies, this stuff works better than the salon color I had that set my allergy symptoms into a frenzy! It is very unusual in its application, but it works beautifully and gives my hair a softness and shine I love. I will be terrribly disappointed if or when I get so grey that this will not cover any longer!
