The trading ports of Canton and Hong Kong were major hubs of the 19th century tea trade. Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey, famously received a gift of citrus blossom scented tea from South China. "Earl Grey" became popular in the tea salons of Europe created by "perfuming" black tea with the flowery essence of bergamot oranges.
