Sweet Kelp / Royal Kombu

Sweet Kelp is a fat free food that is rich in dietary and soluble fiber, iodine, magnesium, potassium and calcium.

Sweet Kelp is closely related to Japanese kombu, and is also known as royal kombu or Neptune's belt. In Icelandic, we call it beltis├żari.

Sweet kelp has a sweeter taste than other types of kelp. It is an excellent flavor enhancer and has the ability to make the food it is cooked with softer and more digestible. Kelp can be wrapped around fish and chicken, baked or steamed. It is very useful as a seasoning for soups, stews, sauces and vegetable dishes.

Suggested Use

For best cooking results, soak the kelp in water for 10 minutes and simmer for 40 minutes.

I've been looking for sea weed/kelp to add to my blended salads. I've tried many different varieties, but this is the best I've tasted so far. It is mild and sweet, and comes in convenient 'format'. I firs chop them into smaller pieces with a scissors and store in airtight container. When I'm going to use it I use a coffee grinder to make it into flour.

grind it to flake size bits and use it on salads or in stews. In sauerkraut or kimchi it can be used both ground and whole.

I use this for miso soup or hot-pot broth. soak them(3x3inches) in water(2cups) and simmer (do not boil) for 40min. You can get great tasting broth!!!

I soaked it 10 minutes as directed. Boiled it for 40 minutes (do not cover or will become foamy and immediately boil over, slimy water all over stove). Tastes like an old fish barrel. Will not purchase again.
