Origin

Yunnan, China

Home to Puer teas, Yunnan is accredited as the birthplace of tea and known for its ethnic diversity, festivals and mountainous landscape.

Puer Tea

Originating more than 1,700 years ago from the small village of Puer in Southern Yunnan, Puer teas are known for their earthy flavor profiles, ability to age and processing shapes (round cakes, bricks and small bowls).

Tuocha

The Tuocha refers to a family of bowl shapes teas, commonly available as Green, Black, Scented or Puer Tuocha. There are many sizes made and this one is known as Mini-Tuocha or Xiao Tuocha. Each Tuocha is wrapped in cotton paper for convenience in storing and tea preparation.

Technique

Mature leaves are selected in summer, gently roasted, sun-dried, steamed, and then shaped into small bowls. During the process, the leaves maintain a fair amount of moisture and a natural fermentation occurs that darkens their color.

Flavor Profile

Very earthy, dark, sweet, smooth brew that gains no bitterness and is ideal to pair with savory foods.

The Tao of Tea

Like the Tao, the art of tea is universal. We began our work with tea in 1997 to be a connecting thread for tea culture. Practicing the art on a daily basis in our teahouses in Portland, Oregon, we are a group of tea enthusiasts from different backgrounds and cultures. We travel, learn, take delight and seek to offer pure leaf teas with great flavor, artistry and soul. Our reward comes through actions that help people's lives, sustain the art of tea and promise a healthy environment.

Suggested Use

Brewing

Unwrap the cotton paper on Tuocha and brew in eight ounces water at 190F for five minutes.

Provides at least three re-infusions.

Other Ingredients

Organic puer tea leaves.

Disappointing

This pu erh brews up rich and dark, but it has a slight fishy taste that I found unpleasant.

quite awful

It said it was wrapped in cotton paper, but the paper seemed to be coated with wax. Others I've had are wrapped in something like a tissue paper - never noticed waxiness. I was surprised at how quickly the button unfurled and the color that came from it was far too fast. I scooped out some of the tea leaves only to find what seemed like a sludge. You should be able to see leaves. I couldn't go past one sip. Wasted money.

fun and interesting way to make tea

Posted by 5146456352335272331 on May 23, 2014

This tea advertises 75 cups on the front label, based on triple steeping. The canister I received only had 21 pellets in it, and the one my friend received only had 20, so right off the bat you are not getting what you think you are getting. I wrote to iherb customer service regarding this shortage and was sent an email saying someone would get back to me. No one ever did, so I cannot recommend buying this product, which is a shame because it is a tasty tea in a form that is fun and easy to take with you. The first steeping is very strong, almost like coffee in color, viscosity and strength of flavor. The 2nd and 3rd steepings are also quite nice. I think I preferred the 2nd steeping because it was the proper strength for me to enjoy.
