Product Overview

Comprehensive B Complex Support

  • Unlike Many B Vitamin Products, Basic B Complex Contains the Active Forms for Enhanced Bioavailability
  • Basic B Complex Contains an Optimal Balance of Essential B Vitamins
  • Basic B Complex is Yeast Free

Basic B Complex consists of a group of eight water-soluble compounds: thiamine (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), niacin (vitamin B3), pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), pyridoxine (vitamin B6), cobalamin (vitamin B12), folate, and biotin. Although each B vitamin is chemically distinct, they often work together in various biochemical functions throughout the body – from cellular energy production, to healthy red-blood-cell formation, to healthy neurological function. Most B vitamins, with the exception of vitamin B12, are not stored in the body; consequently, they must be acquired daily from the diet in order to maintain optimal health.

Supplementing with active B vitamins is extremely important to everyone, especially individuals who may not be able to convert non-active vitamins to their active forms in the liver because of compromised liver function, poorly functioning enzymes, digestive disturbances, or age. Dietary supplements containing these active cofactors have enhanced bioavailability, ensuring the body gets the nutrients it needs.

Thorne Research's Basic B Complex contains the entire B-complex, including the activated forms of vitamin B2 (riboflavin 5'-phosphate), vitamin B6 (pyridoxal 5'-phosphate), folic acid (L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate), and vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin), as well as 80 mg choline citrate. Although choline is often grouped with the B vitamin family, it is not officially a B vitamin.

iHerb Customer Reviews
Excellent general use B-Complex-NON GMO
This is an excellent B-Complex that is well balanced. I like the fact that they use the Methyl form of B-12 and folic acid. As they explain in their literature, the methyl form is what the body uses and thus a more efficient way to supplement. Some people can't convert to the methyl form making most B-complexes ineffective. For someone who is healthy and just wants to make sure they are getting enough of the complex this is great. For someone with a specific health issue they can use this and supplement with isolated b vitamins like b3, B5, or a sublingual Methyl B12 to get the therapeutic dose they desire. Also, there is a 1 star review written by someone from Australia stating that Thorne uses GMO's in their products. I went on Thorne's website and they take a very strong policy stand against using GMO's. Below is a quote. "Thorne Research, Inc. does not make any products that contain Genetically Modified Organisms (known as GMOs)." They are also partnering with an anti GMO group. Below is another quote. "Thorne Research is partnering with the Non-GMO Project, a non-profit organization that verifies that products are free of GMOs or materials derived from GMOs. The Non-GMO Project has developed a nationally recognized standard that has been developed by industry partners who, like Thorne Research, share the concern about the long-term safety of GMOs." I have no interest in defending Thorne. They are big enough to defend themselves. I just don't like it when someone takes a shot at someone with un- true info. Great product

Posted by 5748644575978748211 on Oct 10, 2016

The product is great, I've used it for many years, but only found out recently I could buy it online. The only problem I have is on delivery the box was quite warm (as I live in a humid tropical climate) and I was concerned the vitamins might have been damaged from the heat.

Too strong

Posted by Reviewer2882806 on Oct 03, 2016

Thorne Basic B complex is somewhat well balanced, but it's too strong. Too much thiamin - too much of everything. I like 10-20 mg of niacinamide, because it gives me relaxation and energy at the same time. There is a form of vitamin B3 called nicotinamide riboside, which converts into NAD+, but niacinamide is also converted into NAD, so I plan to stick with niacinamide. I like all the other B vitamins fairly low dose, especially B6, which gives me restlessness during the day and night. I empty out and trash most of the capsule (too messy to save) and I use 1/6 - 1/7 capsule 3 days per week. And I use 1/4 tablet of Megafood Balanced B Complex 4 days per week, but sometimes I will add a little extra niacinamide with the Megafood Balanced B Complex. I also take a little zinc from Earthrise spirulina gold plus (I use regular Earthrise spirulina also) , kelp, vitamin D3 (1400-1600 IU, which gives me 38-42 ng/mL), lecithin (natural choline and inositol) and occasionally a 50% dose of the RDA of SeMSC selenium (Methylselenocysteine/L-Se-Methyl-Selenocysteine 25-30 mcg maybe 3 times a month). I don't think I'm deficient in any other nutrient, but I'm looking into blood tests. I don't take multivitamins any longer. I don't think I need iron, copper, chromium, manganese and molybdenum. I want to avoid unnecessary and excess chromium and other metals. You can get chromium from certain spirulina products if you need chromium, but again, I definitely don't want or need chromium. I certainly test my blood sugar and my blood sugar is okay. I certainly don't trust my uncaring and almost useless doctor concerning blood sugar. Country Life Realfood organics multivitamins (made mostly from food) are basically chromium-free multivitamins (and free of most minerals), but they have cyanocobalamin and too much folate for me. However, I'm still considering using Country Life organics multivitamins. A children's multivitamin might be an idea for people like me who like low-dose B complex vitamins and certain low-dose minerals, but many of them have sugar, synthetic folic acid and too much chromium, etc. I wish they made a low-dose B complex with 100% of the RDA or less in mostly active forms like this Thorne Basic B complex, but with maybe 50 mcg folate maximum and low in biotin, maybe 50 mcg of biotin.

Posted by Reviewer1900566 on Oct 02, 2016

seems to work. have not had any negative symtoms from them but the raito of b6 is WAY off. makes it hard to combine these with anything else. In total i wont buy Thorne any more. As a Hashimoto i don't consider thse product to be optimal at all.
