Product Overview

  • Dietary Supplement

A complete nutritional supplement for pregnant and lactating women

  • Well-absorbed, tissue-ready vitamins and minerals reduce the risk of stomach upset
  • Includes iron and the active form of folate (5-MTHF) to help maintain healthy iron and folate levels
  • Manufactured without the additives and coatings usually found in mainstream prenatal tablets
  • Contains well-absorbed iron picolinate, which is easy on the stomach and non-constipating

Pregnancy is a critical time for optimizing health and nutrition, both for the mother and her baby. Overall nutritional and caloric needs are greatly increased by pregnancy and breastfeeding. However, especially during the first trimester because of nausea, women are not always able to consume the desired number of calories or variety of nutrients. Several nutrients in a good prenatal multiple vitamin have been found to benefit pregnant women who suffer from "morning sickness," including vitamin C, vitamin B6, and vitamin K.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend folic acid supplementation for all women of childbearing age because the biggest need is during the first trimester, when a woman may not even be aware she is pregnant. A woman who consumes a healthful diet with adequate folate may reduce her risk of having a child with a birth defect of the brain or spinal cord. Folate intake should not exceed 250 percent of the government's recommended daily value (1,000 mcg).

The need for other nutrients, such as iron, increases dramatically during pregnancy and is not always compensated for by diet alone.

Multiple vitamin supplementation - during the year before becoming pregnant, during pregnancy, and while breastfeeding - can help produce a healthy baby and benefit the mother through labor, delivery, breastfeeding, and postpartum.

Basic Prenatal is a comprehensive supplement formulated with the special needs of pregnancy in mind. Manufactured with none of the additives and coatings usually found in mainstream prenatal tablets, Basic Prenatal includes only the most bioavailable nutrients.

High-potency multiple vitamins may sometimes be difficult for a woman to "stomach," particularly during the first trimester of pregnancy. Therefore, Thorne does not include large amounts of the nutrients commonly known to cause stomach upset. Instead, these nutrients are included in their most active or absorbable forms for superior utilization. Among these are the active forms of several of the B vitamins – pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (vitamin B6), riboflavin 5'-phosphate (vitamin B2), folinic acid and L-5-MTHF (active forms of folate), and adenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin (vitamin B12).

Calcium in large doses may also cause stomach upset. Therefore, a moderate dose in the highly absorbable citrate-malate form is used. Additional calcium and magnesium can be supplemented, especially in the final trimester.

Basic Prenatal may also be taken by nursing mothers.

Great but.....

Posted by 5297886298851510482 on Oct 03, 2016

I think this is a really good product because I feel it is clean. I am not yet pregnant, however if I take it without food I feel nauseas and actually sometimes I feel sick even with food. Other downside is that it has too many B vitamins (recent research shows this is not good) and also it doesn't have some of the lovely herbal support blends that some other brands have. However, for the price, I think it is a good option - but I will be buying a more expensive brand in future just to get the extra boost and no sickness!

Question: Why Have the tablets changed colour?

Posted by 4889532838739431253 on Oct 03, 2016

This is a question rather than a review. I have bought the Thorne Basic Prenatal from iherb three times now upon recommendation from my GP. However, the tablets in the bottle I just received today are a different colour from the tablets from the last two bottles. Has the formula changed? Is there any chance that I may have received a non genuine product? Can anyone advise?

Almost 5 Stars

I marked this down because of the fillers (Too many bad fillers) and the fact you have to take 3 tabs a day to get the recommend serving per ingredient. Otherwise the ingred list is great in my opinion. FYI: best to take with or soon after food as it may cause nausea on an empty stomach

Vitamin B Cofactors

Posted by StormsinSummer on Sep 07, 2016

I'm not pregnant or nursing. I take these rather than other multivitamins because it simply has the ingredients I was looking for. I only take 1 or occasionally 2 in a day instead of 3 since I'm short (and not feeding an extra little human), and I notice a small difference when I'm taking them to when I don't. What I particularly like is that these have the beneficial cofactors of most of the B vitamins, instead of the ordinary kind. One exception - I wish it had Benfotiamine instead of ordinary B1 (thiamine); as it is, I'm sticking with it anyway. Reordered.
