Methyl sulfonyl methane (MSM) is an organic sulfur-containing compound that occurs naturally in a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, and animals, including humans.

The sulfur in MSM can be utilized by the body in the formation of compounds such as glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate, as well as the amino acids methionine and cysteine. Joints require sulfur and cysteine for healthy functioning. Animal studies have found MSM helps maintain already normal joint cartilage.

A double-blind study found a combination of MSM and glucosamine sulfate resulted in significant improvement in indications of joint health compared to placebo. In another double-blind trial studying the use of MSM at 750 mg daily for six weeks, the MSM group showed significant improvement in indications of joint health compared to the placebo group.
