Heartburn & GERD
Heartburn is an uncomfortable burning sensation in the lower chest. It's the main symptom of GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease. If the muscle between the esophagus and stomach weakens, stomach acid can flow into the esophagus, causing the burning feeling. Certain factors may make GERD more likely to develop, for example, obesity, smoking, pregnancy, excessive alcohol, a high-fat diet and certain medications.
