Value Added Product Reviews by a Trained Herbalist

New to iHerb? Use coupon code KAB400 for up to $5.00 off your first order.

I have been into nutrition and natural healing for many years. I always try to attack the root cause of any problem versus only addressing symptoms (the current Western Medical model). I also have formal training in herbalism. I started using iHerb in 2011 and have been a repeat customer since. Their website is informative, fast and user friendly. I have found their service to be accurate and timely. As a public service, I share my experiences (good, bad or neutral) with products I know. I try to keep my reviews brief but always with substance. Let's be honest, 1 sentence reviews are mostly useless. If you found my reviews helpful, consider indicating that by clicking on the "YES" button. Finally, if you are thinking of placing your first order from iHerb, take note of the special value added information near the top of this page. I hope you enjoy the value I add to your iHerb experience. Peace and good health!

Good for keeping Calcium where you want it and not where you do not

Posted on Aug 24, 2013

107 people found the following review helpful

Vit K2 is great for directing calcium into your bones and keeps it from going into your soft tissues. If you have a soft tissue injury, calcium can deposit at the injury site causing healing issues. Vit K2 will prevent that. It also keeps calcium from building up in your arteries. You don't want that! This is how athletes like distance runners have heart attacks. They take in too much calcium and not enough magnesium and K2. I was diagnosed with calcific deposites in my rototor cuff tendon. It has been debilitating. I took this for a few months and my shoulder injury is finally improving. I found the most benefit when I trippled the dose to 300mg a day. For maintenance 100-200mg should be good. This is the MK7 version of K2 vs. the MK4. The MK4 type has a shorter half life so you need to take more of it to get the same effect. I found taking 3 pills a day of this MK7 product is working well for my shoulder issue. For maintenance I will dial it back to 1 a day. Although this is a fat soluable vitamin there is no research suggesting any toxicity issues. People should feel safe taking 2 or 3 of these a day. There is a prominent ND in Canada who has researched this topic and has come to this conclusion. To help insure calcium is absorbed into the bone and teeth take K2 with your Cal/Mag. I gave this 4 stars because contains soy which some people need to avoid. It is not a lot but people need to be aware of it. If a small amount of soy is not an issue for you this is an excellent choice. If you found this review helpful, kindly visit my iHerb home page by clicking on my handle name above. Excellent general use B-Complex-NON GMO

This is an excellent B-Complex that is well balanced. I like the fact that they use the Methyl form of B-12 and folic acid. As they explain in their literature, the methyl form is what the body uses and thus a more efficient way to supplement. Some people can't convert to the methyl form making most B-complexes ineffective. For someone who is healthy and just wants to make sure they are getting enough of the complex this is great. For someone with a specific health issue they can use this and supplement with isolated b vitamins like b3, B5, or a sublingual Methyl B12 to get the therapeutic dose they desire. Also, there is a 1 star review written by someone from Australia stating that Thorne uses GMO's in their products. I went on Thorne's website and they take a very strong policy stand against using GMO's. Below is a quote. "Thorne Research, Inc. does not make any products that contain Genetically Modified Organisms (known as GMOs)." They are also partnering with an anti GMO group. Below is another quote. "Thorne Research is partnering with the Non-GMO Project, a non-profit organization that verifies that products are free of GMOs or materials derived from GMOs. The Non-GMO Project has developed a nationally recognized standard that has been developed by industry partners who, like Thorne Research, share the concern about the long-term safety of GMOs." I have no interest in defending Thorne. They are big enough to defend themselves. I just don't like it when someone takes a shot at someone with un- true info. Don't miss out while it is on SPECIAL

Much has been written about the Benefits of Vitamin D3. Therefore I will not go very deep here. I will say most adults living in the North or those who don't spend much time outside need to supplement. Certain medications will lower you D levels as well. Vit D is a HORMONE and not a vitamin. Therefore you want just the right levels in your body. Not too much and not too little. This is critical to understand so I always tell people to have your doctor test for your levels every year. Don't go by the lab range alone and feel you are ok. Most labs have a lower limit that is too low. Most progressively thinking doctors agree that you should be between 50-100 ng/ml on a standard 25-OH Vitamin D test. By maintaining this level you will be helped in many areas of your overall health. i.e. Immunity, bone health, cognition and much more. This is a good product in general and great when iHerb has it on special and you can get it for free or for a $1. Don't miss out when it is on special. I don't know why they call it EXTRA strength when it is only 1,000mg. That is a low to average dose for most adults. Take you vitamin D with some fat for better absorption. A recent study showed it is best absorbed with your largest meal of the day. I don't use this product typically. There is another brand in a liquid form which I feel is better absorbed and a better overall deal. If you go to my iHerb web page by clicking on my blue handle above you will see my recommended vitamin D as well as many other value added reviews. Good Magnesium product

Posted on Jun 19, 2015

This is a good choice for someone who does not want to take a powdered magnesium or is away from home and taking a powder is too inconvenient. This glycinate/Lycinate form is more absorbable than most other forms and does not have as strong laxative effect. It can have some effect, so just be aware. I have written much about the great benefits of magnesium so I will not go in to it here. But..... I will say most people are now deficient in magnesium due to modern farming practices. You will do well for yourself by taking some amount of a supplement. I like the Dr. Best brand. They do not manufacture their products but they source from good quality companies and put together well thought out products. Their pricing is usually reasonable too. To see my favorite magnesium product that is highly absorbable go to my iHerb home page by clicking on my handle name above. You will see many other value added reviews. Selenium is critical trace mineral. Many people are low in in Selenium. As a result of to factory farming practices it is not as abundant in our food. This mineral is very critical for anyone who has low thyroid function (hypothyroid). It is needed for you body to produce thyroid hormone. A study has show that in some cases it was able to lower the antibodies in those with a thyroid autoimmune condition called Hashimotos disease. Leave it to Life Extension to come up with a unique product that combines 3 forms on selenium into one capsule. They have been on the leading edge of nutrition research for years and have an impressive track record of innovative researched based products. I have been using this for a few months and I trust it to be a good choice. I don't know of anything else like it on the market today. This is great protection to make sure your body is getting this important mineral. Do not supplement more than 400 mcg of selenium in a day. Get your probiotics refrigerated

Posted on Apr 16, 2013

I am a beliver in probiotics. However poor shelf life can be an issue. Probiotics are not stable for very long at room temperature. If the temperature goes higher there are no guarantees what may be left living. This is no disrespect to iHerb, but I now buy my probiotics from a health food store that keeps them refrigerated or I buy from a vendor that will ship them in ice packs. This was not shipped in Ice. Infact the manufacturer says it is not required. Regardless of that, I keep mine refrigerated. I highly recommend to keep your probiotics refrigerated. Even if it claims to be ok not to do so. Also, look for glass bottle packaging or individually packaged capsules (blister packaging) as this will help with the shelf life. Look for a broad range of strains in any probitic you buy. Seven or more. The Lacto bacteria are for the small intenstine and the Bifo are for the large intestine. You can also take a prebiotic(food for the probiotic) that will help the probiotics thrive. Prebiotics include inulin, FOS, and foods like onions, garlic, bananas and leeks. Also consider NAG. Take your probiotic on an empty stomach with water mixed with bit of lemon or lime. This will help it move through the stomach faster (stomach acid will kill them) and into the intestine where it needs to be. I did use an entire bottle of this product and I found very little benefit from it. Probaly for the reasons I outlined above. Good for adrenal support

Posted on Jun 27, 2013

There are many good reviews written here. I see many people have praised this for treating acne when taken at high doses. I have not used it for that but it does not surprise me. I have used it to boost my adrenals and it does help. If I take it too late in the day it can interfere with sleep. I have read that others find that it helps them sleep better. I typically take 500 mg a day but have taken up to 1,500mg per day. Pantothenic acid is a precursor to pantothene which in turn is a precursor to pregnenalone which is a high level adrenal hormone. It is a precursor to many other hormones such as testosterone, cortisol, estrogen, progesterone, etc. Pantothene has been shown to lower total cholesterol and triglycerides in clinical studies. Good for sleep and or mood support

Posted on Sep 09, 2013

72 people found the following review helpful

Tryptophan is a precursor (building block) to 5-HTP which in turn is a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin. Serotonin is needed to make the sleep hormone melatonin. It helps to understand this relationship when you use these products. Some people use this for mood support and others use it to help with sleep. Tryptophan is found in turkey and chicken and can make you sleepy when you eat a lot of it. 5-HTP is a less costly product but it does not work for everyone. Try 5 HTP before using tryptophan and if it is not effective then give Tryptophan a try. Typical doses for Tryptophan are .5 to 2 grams. This is an amino acid and you will get the best results when taken on an empty stomach. Some people find that taking some vitamin B6 and or B3 with this can help it work better as they is a cofactors in the synthesis of serotonin and melatonin. If you take any mediation for depression you want to clear this with your health care provider first I have used NOW products for years and believe they have good quality products and they hold to GMP standards. They are made in the USA and they keep their pricing reasonable. I will add that some people believe Tryptophan is dangerous because it was taken off the market years ago for causing serious problems and even death. That was due to a contaminated batch of tryptophan that came from a Japanese manufacturer. It was the contamination that hurt people, NOT the tryptophan. Always make sure you buy it from a reputable manufacturer. If you found this review helpful, kindly visit my iHerb home page by clicking on my handle name above and read my other value added reviews. Very economical way to get your D

Posted on Jul 14, 2013

There is lots of research out now on vitamin D. It is actually a hormone and not a vitamin. It was misclassified as a vitamin when it was first discovered. You have vitamin D receptors all over your body proving it has influence on many biological processes. As time goes on science will learn more of what it does but below are just a few know positives about maintaining a high vitamin D level: It is an important immune system modulator. It is also important in helping calcium get into the bones and teeth. It helps insulin get into the cells slowing or preventing insulin resistance. It has been shown to reduce the risk of colon, breast, bladder, and thyroid cancer. It has been shown to reduce the risk of stroke. It can slow the onset of autoimmune diseases. It can help Most people to supplement. Especially those who can not get enough vitamin D from sun exposure. This is especially true of those living in Colder claimants as the angle of the sun is too shallow to be effective in receiving enough uv-b radiation needed to make D. You should get your Vitamin D levels measured every year at your annual physical with a 25-hydroxy vitamin D test. You may be surprised how low your level is. Most functional medicine doctors and ND's agree that a healthy level should be 50-100 ng/ml. Many lab ranges are 30-80. So be aware of this discrepancy. Many MD's still do not measure it and those that do subscribe to out dated lab ranges. It is best absorbed with your largest meal of the day and taking it with some fat helps in the absorption. This product is in olive oil (a very stable oil) which provide some fat. Beware of other D drops that are in less stable oils like sunflower oil. Oils like this can go rancid much easier. These drops are a very economical way to purchase your vitamin D and I have always been satisfied with Nature's Answers quality. Excellent product that is unmatched

Posted on Apr 17, 2013

I have used over 2 bottles of this and it has helped tremedouly with my stomach issues. This is cold processed below 110 degrees F so that it keeps all of the enzymes and long chain polysaccharides in tact. I am not aware of another aloe vera juice product that is similar. As it states, it has removed the Aloin which gives it it's laxative effect so you don't have to worry about taking too much. However, I will say I took very little per day and saw results. I took about 2-3 oz. once a day. It is potent. This product contains a number of herbs that are anti-microbial, rejuvinating and demucelent(soothing to irritated tissues). It also has the famous Essiac herb blend of Sheep Sorell, Burdock Root, Slippery Elm, and Rhubarb root. This has been used for decades by herbalist for many ailments. If you google on it you will not have to look hard to find ton's of information on it so I won't take up space here. It also containls colloidal silver which is a powerfull anti-bacterial. It has been shown to not disturb your natural enzymes or flora. If you don't want/need the added benefits of the herbs you can buy this in a plain aloe vera version and save a few additional dollars. This is more expensive than other aloe vera juice products but if you look closely there is nothing similar. i.e. not a fair apples to oranges comparison. I do wish it was a little cheaper and it would be more available to the masses. If you found this review helpfull please visit my iHerb home page and read my other value added reviews. Exellent value on a whole food source of C

Posted on Feb 05, 2014

62 people found the following review helpful

Much has been written here on the benefits of this product and I agree with much of it. I have been using Vitamin C for over 25 years in different forms. From my personal experience I totally believe that the benefit of a Whole food vitamin is superior to isolated synthetic vitamins. I have also found from experience, when you get your vitamins from whole food sources you don't need to take huge amounts to get the same benefit as you would with a synthetic. I use to take 3-5grams of Ascorbic acid a day. Usually multi-dosing through out the day. Most ascorbic acid today is manufactured from Corn. Mostly GMO corn. Why would you even want to consider taking that? With a whole food source you are getting all of the other constituents (like the bio flavonoids) that work synergistically with that vitamin. This is the way your body was designed to absorb nutrition. To me, this seems very logical. You would not put diesel fuel in your sports car? Put in your body the fuel it was designed to run on. I take two caps of these a day. One with Breakfast and one with either lunch or dinner. When I am feeling run down I will double my dose and maybe add some additional B-vitamins. I do feel a difference. Much more than when I was taking synthetic C in much higher amounts. This is a great product, however,I am only giving this 4 stars vs. 5 because I am disappointed NOW does not offer this in a bulk powder form and allow folks a greater savings. I find more and more people on fixed incomes are not taking important supplements or are substituting cheaper multi-vitamins. Good Coenzyme Q10- much needed if you take a statin drug

Posted on Sep 28, 2013

60 people found the following review helpful

Co enzyme Q-10 is a substance that is made by your liver. It is used in every cell in your body and required to help produce energy. Any one on a statin drug should supplement with 200-300 mg a day as the statins deplete your levels. There are many of good reviews written here so I will not go too deep and repeat what others have said. You don't have to look hard to find many good summaries about the benefits of CoQ-10. There are many good reasons to supplement with this. The form of Co-Q10 that is the most effective is the Ubiquinol form. This Natural Factors product is the Ubiquinone form which needs to be converted in the body to the Ubiquinol form to be used. Some people have trouble making this conversion and as we age it is believed this process becomes less efficient to some extent in everyone. I believe this is a good product and a great deal when it is on special at I herb. I like that it is does not use Soy as some do. However I recommend taking the Ubiquinol form. It is more expensive by weight but it is reported by some studies to be up to 8 times more absorbable. It is water soluble too while Ubiquinone is not and you must consume so fats when you take it to help it absorb. If you understand this you realize your don't need to take as much Ubiquinol to get the same therapeutic effect and effectively it is not more expensive. I give this 3 stars because it is the Ubiquinone form of CoQ-10 which is not water soluble and much harder to absorb and is not the active form. Go to my home page and see the Ubiquinol form of CoQ-10 I give 5 stars along with my many other value added reviews. If you found this review helpful kindly click the Yes button.
