I purchased several bottles of 5-HTP over the past 3 months. Three times with this brand by Natrol. The initial research I found that it may help with migraines, anxiety, and stress in general. However, this may not be a good nutraceutical for those hitting into middle age, or anyone over the age of 30.
5-HTP is the cause for my hair shedding, which only began a few weeks into taking this supplement. I had no other new supplement changes. I did go off many medications I was taking around the same time. My naturopath put me on a gentle cleanse detox for riding my body of any leftover toxins due to the medications, and to detox in general, as she thought possibly my hair shedding was due to the medications. I also had blood work checked, which was reviewed by my naturopath. I am not showing a thyroid issue or entering pre-menopause. The cleanse did not help the hair shedding issue. But after I stopped taking this supplement, it's back to normal again. Coincidence? I think not.
After I decided to do more research on 5-HTP, I found that Web MD states they cannot testify to the safety of 5-HTP and in such, considers it not safe to use, mainly based on correlation with it's use and increased incidents of myalgia (generalized muscle pain). Moreover, I came up with several hits where individuals are asking questions, on many different websites, if 5-HTP could be the cause of their hair shedding/hair loss, even among people who state that their doctors are stumped as well as to why they are loosing their hair, considering that some were then prescribed hair regrowth medications with NO RESULTS whatsoever. So after putting two and two together, with this many people HAVING to ask if 5-HTP could be the cause of their hair loss, IT IS.
I would ONLY give this to a pre-adolescent to young adult, no more over the age of 35, and iffy if the person is over 30, depending on their medical family history (ie, early hair loss in family, early pre-menopause, neurological and muscular disorders in the family like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, etc). In fact, this should only be made available by naturopathic/homeopathic medicinaries....not online, at least not after what I found out. VERY serious side effects with this one.
