Avoided Lipitor with Red Yeast Rice

I have had a high cholesterol problem since my early 20's, in spite of being a vegetarian for more than 30 years, but at the age of 61 it had shot up from the 220-230 range to 287. My physician wanted to put me on Lipitor, but after reading research and first-hand user reports on this drug, I was greatly alarmed. Muscle damage and pain, possible liver damage, even memory and cognitive impairment??? No, thank you! But I was also alarmed by my high cholesterol level. A friend recommended I try red yeast rice. At first, I was sceptical but researched it online and was impressed by the positive reports from people who had used it. There was also a report from ConsumerLab that found that the actual amount of monacolins, the naturally-occuring Lovastatin that lowers cholesterol varied enormously from brand to brand. Based on my research, I concluded that Cholestene was the best choice and was sold by iHerb.com. To be on the safe side, I took only half of the recommended dosage, 2 600 mg. capsules per day. After 3 months I had my cholesterol levels checked again and it had plummetted from 287 to 203, only a trace above the normal range. Triglyceride levels and "good" cholesterol levels had also improved. I have now been taking red yeast rice for close to six months and have had absolutely none of the negative side effects widely reported about the drug Lipitor. I can't recommend this product too highly to people suffering from high cholesterol who don't want to gamble with their physical and psychological well-being by taking the dangerous drug Lipitor, or similar pharmaceuticals.
