Bad combination - too much selenium in this NAC product

Posted on Mar 04, 2009

I take this for HIV, 3 capsules per day. This adds up to 75 mcg selenium. When taking this in combination with NOW's own Adam men's multi-vitamin, which contains the recommended 200 mcg selenium, one gets 275 mcg selenium. This is excessive. I had my blood selenium level checked, and it was elevated. I chose to continue the Adam multi but stop this NOW NAC . I switched to the Jarrow NAC which doesn't have selenium.

Less potent than expected

I take several medications that deplete my vitamin D and have to ingest between 4000 and 6000 IU a day to keep my level within the normal range. In 2008 I was taking two Now softgels of 2000 IU each plus my multi, and my lowest D level was 45 ng/ml in the winter. In 2009 I switched to a single Now 5000 IU gel. This should have been more vitamin D than before. But my D level came in at 37 in july. This is the lowest D level I have had in years, since being diagnosed with D deficiency (12ng/ml) in early 2007. It's especially unexpected for summer time in California. It's still not deficiency since normal range is 30 - 100, but it's the lower end of the range. I was expecting this product to keep me in the upper half of the range, but unfortunately it did not. I think I will switch back to taking several of the 2000 IU softgels for next year.

Can't stand the taste of this. Then again, I have yet to find any protein powder I can stand.
