Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis, or MS, affects the fatty sheath covering the nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. This myelin sheath usually insulates nerve fibers, but in MS, this insulation is destroyed, which results in the slowing or blocking of nerve signals. The disease often starts between the ages of 20 and 40 and can eventually cause disability.
