This is one of the few brands of alpha lipoic acid that comes without the harmful excipients of magnesium stearate and/or steric acid added. These substances are only added to aid in the ease of filling the capsules on the manufacturing floor. They serve as powder lubricants in capsules and as binders in tablets manufacturing. In high doses magnesium stearate and/or steric acid is toxic to the liver and when this is used as excipients in most capsules and tablets, it all adds up to high doses when you have to take more than one type of nutraceuticals per day that contains these two excipients. I choose to buy this over other brands because of the lack of magnesium stearate and/or steric acid as excipients and also because it comes in much smaller doses than most brands and this is convenient to give to people of smaller body sizes and to dogs as well. Alpha lipoic acid is nothing short of being the best repair/regenerative nutrient for damaged or diseased livers, even at the late stage of liver disease, and Dr. Burton Berkson, M.D has been the first person in the U.S to successfully bring hopeless cases of end stage liver patients back to health without resorting to liver transplants by just using alpha lipoic acid, silymarin and selenomethionine, along with some B-complex, vit. E, C and CoQ10.

Most of the CoQ10 dosage out there are ridiculously large. This is just right for me to adjust the dosage for myself and is obviously small enough for my dog as well. Hope they don't decide to discontinue this product in the future.

Sourced from quality European raw material.

Dr. Berkson recommends this brand of ALA because unlike 99% of other brands that uses ALA raw material from unsafe Chinese sources with high levels of toxic residual solvent levels, Metabolic Maintenance stated that they use only trusted high quality European sources of ALA. In one of the interview, in Dr. Berkson's own words, he told the interviewer: "A few years ago, there was a medical doctor in Scottsdale who was using alpha lipoic acid intravenously, and she called me up one morning and said that she gave it to six people. And all of these people passed out when they were receiving the intravenous lipoic acid. They were in the intensive care unit. She wanted to know what the antidote was for this, and my question was, what form of lipoic acid were you using? She said she really wasn’t sure, but a company pharmacist prepared this for them. I said, “Do you have a COA (certificate of analysis) for the raw product?” And she said she’d find it. She came back to the phone and said it was 99% pure alpha lipoic acid. So, I said I would send this out to an independent laboratory and see what actually is in it. She said the product was Chinese but when it came back from the independent laboratory, they found it was 60% unknown substances. So, who knows? Probably it was the unknown substances that were making these people sick rather than the lipoic acid." The problem with 99% of other nutraceutical companies is that they almost always uses the much cheaper raw marerial of ALA from Chinese manufacturers. They won't let you know about their sources unless you insist that they send you a copy of the the certificate of analysis that came with the batch of raw material of ALA that they purchased from the manufacturer/supplier. Consumers need to do this more often to let nutraceutical companies know we are not idiots and we demand they source from quality manufacturers. Anibioticos manufacturers one of the best ALA in the world but hardly any nutraceutical companies would want to use them as a source since it would cost more. Money over safety is the problem. But if they sources it from an unsafe manufacturer, then it would be much healthier for people not to take the ALA supplement at all. Nutraceutical companies need to wake up to this fact.
