Stave off viral infections

Based on a World Health Organization treatment protocol for measles in young and very young children, I take 100,000 IU vitamin A (not beta carotene, one single dose per day for three days. I've had amazing success fighting off nasal-swab diagnosed influenza in 24 hours and many colds. I use it in combination with lowish dose zinc lozenges, Natural Factors Anti-V and 500 mg vitamin c. The zinc, anti-v and c i take every two hours for a few days. I have been able to fight off, in very short order, every viral illness that has attempted to come my way in the last 2.5 years. It's been amazing. Of course, high doses of vitamin A are not appropriate for anyone who is pregnant or could become pregnant.

My kids will also take the nature's plus zinc lozenges in cherry or the nature's plus kid zinc (tangerine) or Nutrition Now Rhino Zinc (orange).

Lovely Safe E supplement

With all of the recent hype over the risks of vitamin E, it's nice to know that this is the ideal E supplement to take (low dose mixed tocopherol/mixed tocotrienol) combined with selenium, a mineral that has scads and scads of solid data (peer reviewed, double blinded, longitudinal data) as a known risk reducer for many kinds of cancer.

I take them *everywhere* with me

I generally have to avoid dairy and gluten (and really all grains, not just gluten containing ones), but on a recent trip to Italy, I decided to throw caution to the wind. I probably at gluten and dairy for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I also took Ω-zyme with every meal and didn't have a *single* digestive upset. I also love Ω-zyme as a proteolytic enzyme.....used on an empty stomach it will cross the gut wall, enter the blood stream and where there are inflammatory proteins, it will digest them, speeding healing, decreasing pain, improving function, reducing inflammation. Oh, O-zyme, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways....:)

This is an exceptional high potency broad spectrum multi. Having tried all of the expensive food based multi's (really) and come back to this over and over, I can absoluely say that in my experience, this is an excellent multi.

Athletes, women in labor, families trekking around theme parks in the heat of summer, are just a few examples of those in need of additional electrolytes. Since fast liquid (or gel) elecrolyte replacement is key for those individuals, products made to fill that need have been created. However, most of them lack sufficient potassium. Think of calcium and sodium as the contractors and magnesium and potassium as the relaxers. Most electrolyte replacements have plenty of sodium (gatorade) but little else to offer. For optimal function and performance our muscles (including our heart muscle!!) need all of them. Alacer is the perfect complement to any existing electrolyte replacement product or it can be used on it's own. My preference is to use it in combination with Ultima (an electrolyte replacement product sold here at iherb). Others will add it to various sports drinks, juice, diluted juice or water. It's ideal for anyone, but especially the following: ~athletes, serious or otherwise;) including children ~anyone with a gut hypermotility (diarrhea, active celiac or other diarrheal illness) ~laboring women ~toddlers or other young children whom for whatever reason are dehydrated (seek medical attention) ~families trekking Disney world (or similar) ~participants in Hot Yoga classes Only those with kidney disease, suspected or known, need avoid excess potassium. Follow your health care providers guidelines in this regard. For all others, enjoy….very few people get enough potassium. Optimizing potassium intake can be a real boost to energy levels -and great blood pressure readings.

No residue or weird smell--just static free clothes!

In the last 10 years, I've tried every fabric softener iherb.com carries and above all others have decided on the Earth and Sun Fabric Softener sheets. It's important to be prepared for the fact that they aren't typical dryer sheets made from compressed rayon fibers but rather papery instead. They feel and look almost like waxed paper with perforations covering the entire sheet. The sheets are folded in thirds with a perforated "tear line" down the middle. Before opening the sheet, tear it in half along the line. When the sheet is unfolded then torn, it tends to rip unevenly. Then open each half and toss it in the dryer on your laundry and start the cycle. At the end of the cycle, the paper sheets will be bunched up and should be discarded. While the scented sheets smell like baby aspirin, there is no lingering smell at the end of the cycle. In other words, if you're looking for something to scent your laundry, look elsewhere (Mrs Meyers Geranium liquid fabric softener is great for that). The resulting laundry is just dry and non-static. It's not freakishly soft like it's been coated in lotion as is the case with many other fabric softeners. My skin tends to react with dermatitis to most scented and unscented fabric softeners (though not all) but this one causes me no issues. If you want a mild, gentle, non-irritating dryer sheet to reduce static and leave no film on your clothes, this is it! We use a box or two a year.

Reduce inflammation

These are great for reducing inflammation (C-RP) associated with all manner of health issues. Of course, diet is the first and best defense (eating 70-80% produce) but this is a fabulous adjunct. It's been great for my achy knees, my grandma's arthritis and my uncle's shoulder pain of unknown cause.

No stomach bugs here

ETA April 2012: Due to concerns about Grapefruit Seed Extract as a possible endocrine disruptor, I no longer use grapefruit seed extract. Thankfully, certain strains of probiotics probiotics are exceptionally effective for preventing gastroenteritis or shortening it's course and severity. Typically, I use Jarrow-dophilus EPS (expensive) or Now Gr-8. The ingredients in both are similar. What's *really* wonderful though is that the probiotic protocol is both evidence based and safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Here is the old review. All that is said here, is the same as my current protocol with probiotics: I haven't the time to have a stomach virus or food poisoning...As any mom can attest, even if you're sick, *you're* still the one caring for the kids. So, whenever I feel an upset stomach coming on - like the kind that could turn into vomiting or intestinal cramps/diarrhea - I start with two tabs of this every hour until it resolves. The key is starting it *early*. Too late and it won't work. It's been effective for my children too when caught early enough. Not appropriate for pregnancy.

I love this probiotic. My 7 yo used to get every stomach virus that came down the pike....well, I did too. We don't have the 'stomachs of steel' that the other two members of our family have. When we feel the slightest stomach thing coming on, we take two of these and two Garden of Life O-zyme (enzymes). It's stopped every stomach thing in it's tracks. Amazing since we both used to be down for the count with a stomach bug at least a couple of times per year.

One of the best iron supplements on the market

Posted on Jul 12, 2009

1 person found the following review helpful

Solgar's Hematinic is, hands down, one of the best iron supplements on the market. It contains Albion Labs patented Ferrochel (FAIR-uh-kel) aka Iron Bisglycinate - an amino acid chelate form of iron that is 1)non-constipating and 2)phenominally safe. In the safety studies, no matter how much was given, it never did reach toxic levels. Other forms of iron can build up rapidly and be deadly (which is why all iron products in the US must come in a childproof container). Virtually all other forms of iron can be constipating to some degree....carbonyl (in the Super nutrition formulas) is the only other iron that comes close to ferrochel, but it's still not in the same league. Good sources of iron include: heme iron from food, ferrochel/iron bisglycinate and carbonyl. Poor sources of iron include everything else. Ferrochel/iron bisglycinate absorbs at about twice the rate of typical iron supplements - in other words, you can take 1/2 the bisglycinate that you would if taking something like SlowFe. So 45 mg of bisglycinate is like 90 mg Ferrous Sulfate. Taking one of the Solgar hematinic would be like taking 30 mg of another iron supplement. Actually, it would be even better than that because it contains all of the factors needed to make a healthy red blood cell. What is needed to make a rbc? B6, folic acid/folate, iron, B12. Hematinic has it all - and in a food base of dessicated liver to insure optimal absorption of their already optimally absorbing ingredients. Along with Nature's Plus Hemaplex, this is my favorite supplement to use with pregnant or post partum moms. It rapidly repletes serum iron, hgb, hct and maybe most importantly, ferritin, to optimal levels. Solgar's Hematinic Formula and Nature's Plus Hemaplex are the two best iron supplements available anywhere - including the prescription iron formulas. Be sure not to take them over the long term without testing serum iron, and most importantly, ferritin because they are exceptionally effective at raising levels to optimal. As with all things related to our bodies, optimal is good, excessive is not.
