After learning with a Naturopath for a number of years I took over as Nutrition Department Manger and Buyer at 2 health food stores in New England from 2003-2007. Working with hundreds of customers over the years, I have been fortunate enough to be able to help many people. What I have to share comes from my experience. I do not give advice or recommendations. All I can tell you is what I would do for myself. My reviews of products are not influenced or affiliated with any manufacturers.

Better than another brand

I ordered beet powder from another company in Florida (they claimed the powder was organic). The color and taste of this beet powder is far superior. For the few extra dollars and and an unquestionable organic label, I'll buy this one again. The price went up a bit so that's why I only gave it 4 stars

I'm moving on...

I always liked this formula and Jarrow's non-vegetarian Bone-Up because of their use of MK-7 (even though it is a small amount). Not many manufacturers are aware of Vit. K's importance in keeping calcium out of soft tissue and in the bones. This formula used to have Glucosamine HCL in it, but now it has potassium (which is a lot cheaper and so ubiquitous in nature that I consider it to be a worthless addition). So they took something valuable out and basically gave us nothing back. They also use magnesium oxide which is poorly absorbed. It's convenient taking a calcium "formula" but there are compromises. So, after using a few bottles of this formula, I've decide to move on. I'm willing to take a few more pills to get what I really want in a supplement. I'll be using Now Foods- Red Mineral Algae, Healthy Origins Vitamin D3 5000, Jarrow- MK7, Thorne Research- Magnesium CitraMate, Zinc Glycinate, and Solgar- Multi Chelated 3mg Boron. I already take a B-Vitamin, Vit C, and chlorophyll (for copper), so everything is covered.

Strong stuff

I read that a person would feel it in 6 days. It took 7 days for me to be clear about the difference my body was feeling. Maybe it builds up as you take it... I had to stop for a day to get my bearings. I took it again the next day and within about 20 hours the feeling was very noticeable again. It certainly is potent. I could not imagine wanting to take more than 100mg in a day. If anything, the dose should be smaller. I'm 140lbs and in the past have been on the hypoglycemic side, not lately though. The label said to watch for blood sugar affects so I took it at night to avoid swings during the day. That strategy didn't really work because it seems to take almost a whole day to take effect, and the effect was pretty dramatic: The first thing I noticed was that my thinking had changed, like I was on timed release coffee. The next thing I noticed was a feeling in my gut like I had been doing sit-ups; it felt tight. Then after eating a large meal, I noticed I was not fatigued like I normally am. But it went further than that: I felt like my blood sugar did not rise from the meal. My stomach felt full but I still felt hungry. I took the next day off from taking it, but the day after I went back on Benegene I felt like I couldn't eat enough: My blood sugar felt low and no matter how much I ate, it would dip back down within the hour and I'd need to eat again. This went on for hours. It seems that my body doesn't want me to take a pill every day. 3 days on with 2 skipped days in between seems to work best for me.

Helping to prevent delayed onset muscle soreness

I've been using D-Ribose to help prevent delayed onset muscle soreness. If my muscles really feel tight after a workout, and I take 5- 10 grams within an hour of the workout it helps. If I workout till muscle exhaustion, I'd need 15 grams. I wouldn't take 15 grams all at once though: I'd take some before the workout. This is the most economical D-Ribose I've found so far. Sometimes the powder clumps up a little, but it's no big deal: I just crush it back up.

No BPA in the cans, Lot's of Potassium.

With concerns over BPA I emailed them. They told me their sealant for the inside of the can is water based. I don't know what it is, but it's not Bisphenol-A. They also didn't say the amount of potassium in each serving, but told me that if they listed it on the label, they would have to keep the potassium strictly calibrated and might have to add some here or there due to the natural variations from batch to batch. They didn't want to have to add any ingredients to their product. They sent me a list of the average potassium per serving, and this one (with added lime) has the most. That's why I'll keep buying this particular one.

No reason to pay extra for Bronner's... Ounce per ounce it's even better than buying Bronner's in the Gallon size! Almond scent is not overpowering.

Whole herb turmeric concentrate vs. curcumin extract only. No gelatin! I'm not sure if the lecithin is GMO free??? In an effort to get away from gelatin, I switched from New Chapter's Turmeric Force to Gaia. Potency is practically the same (10mg difference).

Less expensive boost of L-Carnosine

I use 1/2 teaspoon per day and have never felt the tingling sensation they refer to on the bottle. I don't notice an energy boost, but what's important is that it's boosting Carnosine which has been shown to lengthen the ends of our chromosomes called the Telomeres, protecting them from deterioration. It's one of the best DNA protective anti-aging things we can do.

Can be Strong! Each batch seems to be different.

I like this one is better than the cinnamon flavor because the cinnamon flavor burned my mouth if I used it undiluted. It tastes like the periobrite toothpaste. It's strong and can still be overwhelming when gargling with it. I have found that some batches are overwhelmingly strong and some are just right. I'm not sure why there is such a difference. I'll by it again because I can't find anything better. I just wish they'd get their quality control together so the product is consistant.

I stopped buying this

I found out that Beta-Alanine is the limiting factor in the body's own production of Carnosine, so I use that now. There's nothing wrong with this product except that it's 3 times more expensive than going with Beta-Alanine. Made with Corn

Posted on Jan 03, 2012

2 people found the following review helpful

Their website was ambiguous as to whether they made their erythritol from sugar beets, corn, or wheat. I called them, and they said it's made from corn. I asked if it was Non-GMO corn and they could not verify it. They said there is nothing in writing on their website that says Non-GMO. They followed up my call and sent me an e-mail with this response to the GMO question: Thank you for your interest in Truvia... The carrier is erythritol which is made by a natural fermentation process that uses corn. The corn that is used may be genetically modified. Thank you Truvia Customer Service truvia.com OK, they admitted that it's Genetically modified. Remember, it would cost more to make something Non-GM. There's no way they would spend more to make it GMO free without saying it on the label, because there would be no benefit to the company (in sales). They are a mass marketed item disguised as a health food store item. They are not being 100% true or honest to the health food consumer. If they ever change their commitment to the health food shoppers of this world by going GMO free, then I would gladly support their products. The only company I have found that uses an organic source for their erythritol is Wholesomesweeteners Zero. iHerb does not carry it. Please don't confuse it with Zsweet. It's not the same company.
