It is unfortunate that few people have not heard of or tried this cereal.
This super grain almost disappeared because the Aztec virgin sacrifice rituals with blood drinking and an amaranth made "host" was thought to be the devil's version of the Catholic church's sacrament. So this grain was ordered wiped out by the Spanish in the process of there missionary zeal. Since unknown to them was the scientific nutritional value of this grain and being a critical part of the dietary health of this civilization it was just one more factor toward its demise.
As a cereal it is better flavor than their pure bland oat bran flakes and since it has oat bran in it, I think it is the better choice. This cereal does not have that heavy feeling of many whole grain cereals after you eat it. (Like you are some livestock eating some heavy feed grains.) It is really one of the few cereals that has a great balance of amino acids. The amaranth gives the extra lysine to make these oats a pretty solid protein. I give it a 5 starts as a cereal but I wish for the price(more expensive in stores) it was 16 ounce box since I go through the cereal so quickly.
