Vitamin E is a generic term used to describe all tocopherol and tocotrienol derivatives that exhibit the biological activity of alpha-tocopherol. Although gamma-tocopherol is the most abundant tocopherol in the American diet, alpha-tocopherol is found in the serum and red blood cells of healthy individuals in the highest concentration and is considered to be responsible for the majority of the biological actions of vitamin E. While the majority of research has been on alpha-tocopherol, investigations are being performed on the contributions of beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocopherol to the action of vitamin E.
Vitamin E is an essential nutrient that functions as an antioxidant in the body. Since it is a fat-soluble vitamin, its action takes place primarily in fatty tissues such as cell membranes, where it is essential for protecting these sensitive membranes from oxidative damage. Vitamin E is also known for enhancing circulatory health and immunity. Vitamin E is used clinically to support healthy cardiovascular and neurological function. As an antioxidant it also helps protect the eyes from oxidative damage caused by UV radiation from the sun.
E-500 supplies pure d-alpha tocopherol in a form that is easy to absorb. The d-alpha tocopherol in E-500 is extracted from vegetable oils via a distillation process that removes potential protein allergens. And, unlike many manufacturers, Thorne does not dilute its vitamin E with soy oil - further decreasing allergenic potential. And Thorne's E-500 is water soluble because a natural emulsifier has been added to make it more easily absorbed for individuals with fat malabsorption.
