I spent a long time researching the best set of brushes to buy for my first set - weighing up price against quality. As I live in New Zealand, prices of higher end brands such as Mac, Sedona Lace, Sigma etc... were too expensive for me so I decided to go with Elf. PROS: The brushes are lovely and soft, and they're good for someone just starting out with their makeup. Each brush has the name of it written on the side so it's easy to decipher which brush you need to use for the job. The brushes themselves are quite styly (all black). I haven't experienced any shedding yet which is fantastic. CONS: There is no blending brush for the eyes, which is really the most important brush you need when doing eye makeup! I've tried using the "contouring" brush to blend eyeshadow, but it's not big enough and doesn't blend evenly. Although the brushes are lovely and soft, they're not very dense so doing any buffing with mineral powder foundation isn't possible. VERDICT: Good for someone starting out, however if you want to do a really good job with your eye makeup then consider spending a bit more money on a set with a blending brush and brushes that are denser. I will be saving up to buy a better brand.
This product is OK when I use it on my eyebrows, however once it dries you can get some of that white stuff coming up around the edges that looks like dandruff, so you have to be very precise when putting it on. On the eyelashes as a primer, you have to be very quick to put mascara on straight away after applying it, otherwise it dries and makes putting mascara on a nightmare and then it looks clumpy and horrible. If you're quick it does make putting mascara on easier though, and it does help to keep eyelashes from clumping. It was OK for the price, however I would consider spending more money on a better quality product next time - I won't be repurchasing.
PROS: This is a great eyelid primer - it goes on smoothly, a little goes a long way, and it makes putting on eye makeup easy. It makes eyeshadow colours more vibrant (makes them "pop") and helps to keep the eyeshadow stay in place and prevent colour depositing in the crease throughout the day. Great price. CONS: The smell is minging!!! It smells like synthetic plastic horribleness... it's not a smell I've been able to get used to, and although the product does what it's supposed to the smell has completely put me off using it. The packaging is very basic, and when trying to get the applicator out of the bottle it sticks at the end, so you have to be a bit forceful to get the end of the wand out of the bottle which causes it to flick product around if you're not careful. VERDICT: I will not be repurchasing, I will be spending more money on a better smelling product.
This is a nice handy set for beginners. I like the concept of the double-ended brush as it saves space when travelling. I like the look of the brushes. 3 of the brushes are really useful and do the job they're intended for, however the blending brush is useless at blending eyeshadow - it's just not big enough. It's fine for applying eyeshadow to the lid or in the crease though - it's slightly tapered at the end, so it actually fits really nicely in my crease as I've got quite small eyes. The brushes are lovely and soft. I'll probably only use this whilst travelling though, and purchase another travel brush for blending.
