Stevia is a genus of about 240 species of herbs shrubs in the sunflower family (Asteraceae), native to subtropical and tropical regions from Western North America to South America. The species Stevia rebaudiana, commonly known as sweetleaf of Sugarleaf, or simply stevia, is widely grown for its sweet leaves. As a sweetener and sugar substitute, stevia's taste has a slower onset and longer duration than that of sugar.

With its extracts having up to 300 times the sweetness of sugar, stevia has garnered attention with the rise in demand for low-carbohydrate, low sugar food alternatives.

In a few countries, it has been available as a sweetener for decades or centuries; for example; stevia is widely used as a sweetener in Japan where it has been available for decades.

More recent medical research has shown promise in treating obesity and hypertension. Stevia has a negligible effect on blood glucose, even enhancing glucose tolerance; therefore, it is attractive as a natural sweetener to diabetics and other on carbohydrate-controlled diets.

iHerb Customer Reviews

No recomendable

Posted by iHerb Customer on Dec 02, 2014 | Verified Purchase

Great to use instead of sugar, and way healthier

Waste of money

I bought this to mix with erythritol to make my own Truvia. I would not buy this again. It has very very little sweetness. Very frustrated and disappointed, so I write this in hopes of keeping someone else from making the same mistake.

I don't use sugar in my kitchen, but sometimes you just need something sweet and stevia is great solution. I use it for occasional baking cookies or cakes, or simply when someone drops for a cup of coffee. I'm pretty pleased with this product.

Don't Waste Your Money

I have been buying Stevia extract powder from iHerb for many years. NuNatural and NOW Stevia Extract Powder brands are both excellent. I, however, recently threw my money away when I bought 12 ounces of NuNaturals Stevia Powder, thinking I was buying Stevia EXTRACT Powder. Their Stevia Powder contains mostly "Maltodextrin and natural flavors." It is 20 times less sweet than the Extract Powder, and it doesn't taste as good. And I started putting on weight, something I didn't want, after using it. But this product, Sweet 'n Natural stevia Leaf Extract, is even much worse. I started using it at the recommended dosage and then increased gradually trying to reach some degree of sweetness but the more I added, the bitter it became. Gonna throw it away along with the NuNaturals Stevia Powder.
