It is essential to maintain healthy vitamin D levels throughout all stages of life, from fetal development to old age. Vitamin D helps protect a number of important functions in the body. The current recommended daily vitamin D intake of 200-600 IU for adults is based on the minimum allowance to protect against bone disease. However, an upward revision of the FDA's guideline is now under consideration in light of new research, especially pertaining to immune function. Although direct sunlight exposure is a good source of vitamin D, many people do not get enough sun due to season change, latitude, or lifestyle. Therefore, vitamin D supplementation can be of great benefit in these cases.

The Vitamin D Council (VDC) is a non-profit organization of medical professionals, vitamin D researchers, and concerned citizens whose goal is to educate professionals and the public on vitamin D deficiency and its associated health risks. The VDC recommends an average of 5,000 IU/day vitamin D for adults. Better yet, they suggest testing 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and dosing accordingly. Ideal blood levels should fall between 50-80 ng/mL.

Infants should not receive more than 400 IU/day, which is the daily dose of vitamin D supplement that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends for breast-fed and partially breast-fed infants.

Thorne Research's Vitamin D Liquid is in a base of medium chain triglyceride oil, preserved with mixed tocopherols.

Very Very Effective!

The only vitamin D brand i will ever buy again! For years my daughter had very low vitamin D levels. Of course the doctors never told us the importance of it. My mistake for trusting them. For years we tried to get her levels up but nothing was working. A combo of this and the thorne vitamin D with K/2 did the trick. Levels went from 18 to 67 in a couple of months!!!

Great that vitamin D comes in liquid form, makes it so much easier for smaller children to take.

Made from lanolin and GM foods

I bought this before really researching how Vitamin D is sourced. I emailed the company and they told me "Vitamin D is made from cholesterol that originally came from sheep lanolin. Mixed Tocopherols are primarily soybean, along with corn, canola and sunflower. Medium chain triglyceride oil is from palm oil." I would not recommend buying this product as lanolin is clearly toxic with all the chemicals they spray on the sheep and also the soybean, corn and canola is all genetically modified! I thought Thorne would have a better product than this. I just recently bought the Garden of Life Vitamin D3 which seems a much better product as it is plant-sourced vitamin D from: https://au.iherb.com/pr/Garden-of-Life-Vitamin-Code-RAW-D3-5-000-IU-60-Vegetarian-Capsules/39195?rcode=NAT9730

Top quality, except for the new bottle

Posted by Reviewer2812572 on Jan 31, 2017 | Verified Purchase

Thorne have recently changed the bottles for this product. It used to come in a dropper bottle and that worked great for me. Now the bottle is like the bottles used for essential oils and it's a struggle to get the drops out of it. What I do now is, I use their old dropper bottle, but transferring the liquid is a bit of a hassle. Also, the photo shown on iherb as of this writing is still of the old dropper bottle, so buyer beware.
