"Groat" is an old Scottish word from hundreds of years ago, that refers to cereal made from whole, hull-less oats. They take a bit longer to prepare than cut or rolled oats, but the exceptionally hearty flavor and chewy subtlety of this wholesome porridge make it well worth the wait. Oats are a very good source of soluble fiber, which prevents cholesterol from entering the bloodstream, so start the day the heart-healthy way with a rich bowl of Bob's Red Mill Whole Grain Oat Groats. They also make a great side dish for dinner.

Suggested Use

Double Boiler Method:

The night before, in the upper part of a double boiler, put in 1 cup Oat Groats,1/4 tsp salt and 4 cups boiling water. Cover and cook for 30 min. to 1 hour. Turn off heat and let cereal remain in boiler until morning. Reheat and serve in morning. Makes 4 servings.

I had never eaten oat groats before trying Bob's Red Mill, and now I'm so glad I did. They're so much better than rolled oats. You can't even compare them. They have more flavor plus a great chewy texture. They take much longer to cook--50 minutes for the groats and 5 minutes for rolled --but I think they're worth it. I make big batches to last several days, and then they don't seem like more work.
