Product Overview

Maintaining a normal plasma homocysteine level has joined elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels as a leading concern for maintaining good cardiovascular health. Plasma homocysteine levels are also associated with maintenance of bone, female reproductive, cognitive, and neurological health. Numerous studies advocate the lowering of plasma homocysteine levels via nutritional supplementation. A number of biochemical imbalances that can raise homocysteine levels can be addressed by supplementing with the appropriate nutrient cofactors. For example, folic acid (as L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate), vitamin B12 (as methylcobalamin), and betaine (trimethylglycine) are involved in recycling homocysteine to the amino acid methionine, while the breakdown of homocysteine into the beneficial amino acids cysteine and taurine can be facilitated by pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (the active form of vitamin B6). Studies have shown these nutrients can help maintain normal plasma homocysteine levels.

In addition to the beneficial homocysteine effects of the ingredients in Methyl-Guard, folic acid has been shown to help maintain the normal function of the arterial walls, allowing them to dilate more readily and enhance circulation. Homocysteine levels can be increased in individuals in which the enzymatic reaction responsible for converting folic acid to the active methyl donor L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) does not function properly; therefore, Methyl-Guard contains 400 mcg of active 5-MTHF per capsule.

Maintaining normal homocysteine is important for good cognitive health. A deficiency in homocysteine-metabolizing cofactors is commonly seen in the elderly, which can result in an increase in homocysteine levels with advancing age. Vascular structures can be adequately maintained when plasma homocysteine levels are normal by elevated homocysteine, thus helping to maintain cognitive health. Elevated homocysteine levels associated with aging, as well as low levels of folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12, can result in the decreased methylation of numerous substances, including DNA and proteins, decreasing the integrity of vascular structures and neurons. Providing the nutritional cofactors for homocysteine metabolism provides support for a healthy brain.

Methyl-Guard was the first dietary formula on the market to promote homocysteine metabolism and is the only one that contains the active, body-ready forms of the homocysteine-metabolizing nutrient cofactors.

Great product

Posted by 5270655052227436320 on Feb 17, 2017

I have been taking a low dose of this stuff for about 3 years now and I have always found it helps with my energy. I am sensitive to fillers used in some products and luckily have no issues with this one. A quality product.

successfully lowered my Homocysteine levels from 38 to 4.4 within months

Posted by 5720925330689303486 on Jan 16, 2017

in October last year, I learned of my MTHFR heterozygous C677T mutation after feeling unwell all the time without explanation. When I had tests done, my homocysteine levels were alarmingly high especially for someone of the age of 24, my C-reactive protein was also very high and I was immediately recommended to go onto Thorne's Methylguard. I started on this formula but after discovering Methylguard plus, i upgraded for convenience of having to swallow less capsules daily. I am pleased to report that within a few weeks of taking the recommended dosage, a fog was lifted from my otherwise cloudy brain, I had more energy, felt joyful again and I could finally concentrate again. I did have some coincidental side effects, however because I changed so many things following my diagnosis and I was taking a few other supplements (i.e.. Choline, N-acetyl-cysteine, Niacin, Magnesium orotate, withania, and ubiqinol to name a few - btw i recommend all of these) I am unsure of what caused what - the side effects included intermittent eye twitches which would last for up to two days in one eye - they were extremely annoying but no one else could see it so it was not a terrible effect to suffer. The other effect I noticed was a break out of pimples along my spinal area, this was really odd and I have no idea what it was from but it follows the pattern of blemishes commonly seen in a condition called hidradenitis suppurative - these all came to the surface and were really sore like boils, and then each of them went down and disappeared within about a week. I had suffered with acne and cystic pimples before my diagnosis which seams to be resolving now.

I take two a day for treatment of the MTHFR gene and I have noticed symptoms improve. I have taken it every day for nearly two years now. My doctor put me on to it.

Excellent B

Posted by 4793885060379824038 on Sep 06, 2016

Methyl-Guard is and excellent way to take vitamin B for people who are sensitive to other vitamin Bs. I have a bad reaction to three of the Bs, especially B6 but Methyl-Guard causes no problem what so ever. It is perfect for people with the MTHFR Gene mutation. I have been taking it for over a year now and wouldn't take my B vitamins any other way.
