This B complex really seems to wake me up. I always try to take this before lunchtime. If I take it too late in the day, I have difficulty sleeping.

A "stupid" formula - use Jarrow's B-Right instead

Posted by Reviewer1139676 on Mar 08, 2009 | Verified Purchase

The Krebs cycle in our cells (the process that most needs B vitamins), needs 10-20 times as much niacinamide and vit. B5 (pantothenic acid or a pantothenate) as vits. B1, B2, and B6. When you supplement with a formula like this with wildly excessive amounts of B's 1,2,&6, the cells quickly use up their store of niacinamide and pantothenic acid, and the result is deficiency symptoms of the niacinamide especially, since, unlike pantothenic acid, niacinamide is rare in foods. Niacinamide deficiency symptoms manifest as irritability, deep cracks in the tongue, etc. and show that there is not enough niacinamide left to support vital body biochemistry. I learned this 30 years ago when I researched why I was getting these symptoms despite taking a formula like this apparently containing adequate niacinamide. I switched to a more biochemically balanced formula with much less of B's 1,2,&6, and the problems disappeared. Many years later I attempted to use a vegetarian multiple that looked good in many ways, but had the same bad B vitamin ratio as this formula. The niacinamide deficiency symptoms returned. The reason I couldn't just correct it by taking extra niacinamide, is that I would have needed dangerously high amounts of niacinamide (500 - 600 mg.) to balance the ridiculously high amounts of the other B's in the formula. We need to wake up supplement mfrs. to what is a correct balance. Jarrow's B-Right is an excellent formula, and even includes the brain-supportive methylcobalamin form of B12, and a coenzyme form of B6 for those whose conversion enzymes are a bit sluggish (a common problem). The only problem for vegetarians is the gelatin capsule. I contacted Jarrow to request a switch to vegicaps or tablets, and I hope others will as well.
