There seems to be a lot of misconception about whether or not to take a Vitamin D supplement. Sadly, a lot of doctors are misinformed as to the benefits of its use. Since I'm prone to skin cancer, I spend a minimum amount of time in the sun. In addition, during the winter months, my time in the sun is virtually zero as the outdoor temperatures where I live are so cold. It was -14 degrees Fahrenheit when I woke up today, and I certainly have no desire to leave my house when it's this cold outside. What's interesting, is that a couple of months ago I requested that my doctor do a blood test to see how deficient I was in Vitamin D. I had been taking a 1,000IU supplement daily, but was feeling lousy and depressed. When the results came back, I was surprised to learn that while low, my results were still within the normal range. I asked my doctor if it would be alright to take more than 1,000IU per day, and her answer was no. She said that by doing so, I would be subject to Vitamin D toxicity which can lead to hypercalcemia, a buildup of calcium in your blood. When I heard this, I got scared, but also decided to do further research on the Internet. That's when I read article after article stating that it's not only safe to take 10,000IU of Vitamin D daily, but also that it's highly beneficial to your health. I found no studies whatsoever that indicated that it would be unsafe to consume such a quantity each day. Just to make sure that I was playing it safe, I looked up the symptoms of Vitamin D toxicity and made sure that none of them were affecting me. The symptoms of hypercalcemia resulting from too much Vitamin D include: feeling sick or being sick poor appetite or loss of appetite feeling very thirsty passing urine often constipation or diarrhea abdominal pain muscle weakness or pain feeling confused feeling tired To the contrary, I found that by taking the Healthy Origins Vitamin D3 Gels on a daily basis, they made me feel a whole lot better. My depression faded away, my energy levels improved, and my general feeling of health reached levels it hasn't attained in years. The bottom line is that many doctors will advise against taking this product. Unfortunately, I feel that they are either trying to protect themselves should a rare incidence of Vitamin D toxicity occur, or they simply aren't educated to the fact that taking these levels on a daily basis is a good thing. Speaking from personal experience and after reading many scholarly articles on the subject, I would highly recommend that everyone take 10,000IU of Vitamin D daily. It works for me and I see no reason why it wouldn't work for you. The Healthy Origins brand is of very high quality and the gel capsules are extremely easy to swallow. This product receives 5 stars from me.
