Thorne Hydrolyzed Whey Protein is better tolerated

Posted by iHerb Customer on Nov 23, 2009 | Verified Purchase

I find that this hydrolyzed whey protein product is better tolerated than other whey proteins. The majority of whey protein products consist of low temperature processed, undenatured, whey protein these days. They are typically marketed as preserving the important immune modulating protein fractions intact, particularly those involved in glutathione synthesis. However if you suffer from a medical condition like ME/CFS and have a redox problem then stimulating glutathione can be overwhelming and result in a crash or increased flu-like symptoms. This product is a hydrolyzed whey protein which means it has been processed to break the proteins down almost into free form amino acids. This makes it easier to digest and to tolerate. If you have tried other whey proteins before but been creamed I recommend trying this whey instead. It is not very easy to work with, the powder is very light and needs to be tapped against the side of the mixing vessel to release it from the scoop, sometimes releasing a cloud of dust in doing so. It needs to be blended to mix with liquid, I am using an electric hand blender that takes about 5 seconds to wash up. It won't mix by shaking in a container. I can put up with this as Thorne are smart enough not to add any other ingredients, you are just getting pure whey protein. I mix it with water and it tastes good.

moisture in product

I cannot swallow due to radiation from throat cancer. I live off of the Thorne Research Hydrolyzed Whet Protein and Carlon Labs Cod liver oil. I stir these two together and inject it in my stomach feeding tube. The recent batch of Thorne Research Hydrolyzed Whey Protein I purchased from I-Herb was lumpy. This happenens when the product gets damp or moist. It is very difficult for me to get the lumps out so I can inject it in my stomach tube. I was very disapointed with the product this time.

Another reviewer said that this whey was better for people with cfs because you wouldn't get the crash afterwards that you get from other whey. I had noticed the same problem with whey. This is a great product, gives energy/nutrition with no downside. My husband who doesn't have health problems likes it too.

Thorne Quality

No doubt that this product is manufactured by Thorne. Super fine powder, doesn't taste like vomit (like hydrolyzed casein). Recent studies have me doubting the claims behind the product (as far as digestibility/being more effectively absorbed vs regular whey isolate). I have several tubs so I will inevitably come to my own conclusion by the end.
