Helpful only if you actually buy the products advertised

You can't get something for nothing, which is the case of this book. It's just a huge products advertisement cleverly disguised as a free book. Pass.

20% good, mostly very poor advice

The good parts of the book include the author's comments on how people must take responsibility for their health choices and work on improving their lifestyles and not expecting miracle drugs to fix everything. The advice to stop smoking, drinking alcohol and coffee and taking recreation drugs is sound, as is the sleep hygiene information, some of the coping strategies for stressful situations, and the warnings about why sleeping drugs and antidepressant drugs are not as effective or safe as we have been led to believe. I was also very surprised to see the author say that using 5HTP, GABA and SAMe can be helpful band-aid solutions to use if you need to while you are putting lifestyle and nutritional changes into place and waiting for them to work, but that they themselves do not actually treat the cause of your symptoms and so are not real solutions long term. This is an important point, but lessened a lot because very few real causes of sleeplessness and anxiety are even mentioned let alone described in detail. Good book, but second half reads like an infomercial for PGX

I read the book cover to cover. There are many good points made about stress and anxiety and insomnia and the urgent need to deal with the issues that are causing these debilitating conditions in your life. Michael Murray, like all naturopaths, can't help having cheap pot shots at the medical profession throughout the book. The hypocrisy of the fact that he then sells nutritional supplements throughout the book, with entire chapters dedicated to selling PGX, gives the book a commercial bias and makes it sound like he has an axe to grind.

some sound advice

however my gripe with Michael Murray is how much he has cashed in on his reputation since writing the Encyclopaedia of Natural Medicine or being on Oprah or some such. Once a major opponent of using fish oils as a source of omega 3 (see book: he repeatedly advises using flaxseed instead ), since attaching his name to the bottle of the same , he has become one of their staunchest supporters. Contradictions discourage me. Nonetheless, all reading is worthwhile as it usually leads to some light-bulbs flashing and everything can be cross referenced if you devote some time.
